Paintballs are the ammunitions of your paintball gun. These are tiny gel capsules that contain the paint. The capsules burst on impact thus releasing the paint inside to mark the player. The paint is non toxic and water based. That is why the paint easily washes off from skin and clothing.

There are many inexpensive paintballs ideal for practice games and backyard paintball plays. But if you are competing in official tournaments, high end paintballs are required in order to ensure that the gel caps will not burst or break inside the gun.
The creator of the original paintballs is Nelson Paint which manufactures special tournament paintball brands including Hotspot, Hemorrhage, and Precision. Other notable paintballs are RPS Marballizer for tourneys, Wrek Elite Premium, Kee Action Diablo Heat and Diablo Ramp. There are also generic paintballs which are best for practice firing.
The standard size of paintballs is 0.68 inches in diameter. A paintball will feel like a small water balloon and will hold up if you drop it from a short distance. But if fired from a paintball gun, it will explode on impact leaving a 6-inch splatter.
A paintball fired from a gun has a maximum velocity of 300 feet per second. It can inflict eye and ear damage so the players need adequate protection.
It is not difficult to choose a paintball. If you are competing in a tournament or in serious team play, it is best to buy branded paintballs to ensure that the balls will not break easily.
